Journal May 22th

This class began discussing the reading “The Impact of Using Technology in Teaching English as a Second Language” assigned last class. The professor asked some questions regarding the article to prepare us for the evaluation about this reading to be held next week. Then, he asked us to read a short story “Professor Panini” by Mathew Grigg about a scientist who switches his mind with his toaster by accident. The story takes places in 2023 and it can be found on this website http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/ProfPani724.shtml. Once we read the story, the professor asked us to create a graphic tale to clarify the story´s meaning and moral. He also asked us to do a mindmanager to teach our future students values, culture and vocabulary. Here is the outline for the story and the mindmanager my classmate Stephany and I created.
“Professor Panini”
  A scientist graduating from university.
A scientist having breakfast “bagel”
The scientist tried to put his new invention to work but something went wrong.
The scientist’s mind switched with the toaster.
Being the toaster, he called the clerk for help.
But the clerk pushed the wrong bottom and turned himself into the duck’s body having a terrible end.
The toaster asked his human body to go for help, but it never came back.
The toaster decided to kill him-self with an entire stock of bread.
The fireman came to turn off the flames and the alarm.
The toaster was taken to a repair shop and then to a kitchen’s restaurant.
Mindmanager
Ask your students to brainstorm about the reading. They should discuss their opinions with their classmates.
Show your students the graphic tale about the story to clarify it.
By using images students learn vocabulary regarding food and restaurant`s items.
Students play charades to check their understanding about the vocabulary.
Students research about Uk’s most common dishes and celebrations.
The teacher organizes a round table to compare UK’s and Costa Rica’s findings.
Students write down another ending for the story and answer the following questions:
a.       What do you think the reasons for the scientist to create this machine were?
b.      If you had the chance to change your mind with someone who would you like to do it with and why?
c.       Can technology change people’s mind and behaviors? How?
d.      How do you think our society will be in 2023 in regards to technology?
